Manhattan Jury Awards $500,000 for Pedestrian Hit by New York City Transit Bus
A Manhattan jury awarded a Bronx woman $500,000 in compensation for the injuries she suffered when knocked down by a New York City Transit Authority bus. The case stemmed from a December 23, 2004 incident when woman crossed 181st Street at the intersection with St. Nicholas Avenue. As she reached the curb, the Bx3 bus pulled up to the intersection and hit the woman. The impact, while not very hard, knocked her to the ground. When New York City Transit refused to settle, we took the case to court and won the case at trial.
$100,000 for Pedestrian Hit by Car in East Northport, Long Island
A Vietnam veteran crossing Larkfield Road in East Northport, Long Island was struck by a pick-up truck. The man suffered significant injuries, including a fractured hip that required surgery and a lengthy stay at the Northport Veteran’s Hospital. A part-time construction worker, the man missed many months of work and was left nearly destitute by the accident. Attorney Carol Schlitt secured a rapid settlement with the truck driver’s insurance company without having to go to trial, thus getting her client a payment as fast as possible. The insurance company agreed to pay the full limit of the insurance policy, $100,000 before the case was put in suit.
A Settlement for a Pedestrian in Manhattan Struck by a Taxi
On a Monday morning in July, a woman walking to work was struck by a taxi. As she reached Lexington Avenue, the woman crossed in the marked crosswalk heading from the southeast corner to the southwest corner of Lexington and 89th Street. At the same time, a cab driver drove his taxi across 89th Street and made a left onto Lexington. As he turned, he struck the woman while she was in the crosswalk. The woman asked us to represent her. After conducting an investigation into the matter and building the case, we negotiated a settlement for the full value of the case.
Settlement for Long Island Student Hit by Car While Crossing Merrick Boulevard
A student at Massapequa High School attempted to cross Merrick Boulevard with two friends. They crossed in the middle of the street and not at the crosswalk, though this was not an unusual event at that location. A car struck the student as he crossed the street knocking him to the ground. The student suffered soft tissue injuries to his legs. Ms. Schlitt worked to overcome the threshold requirement of New York State law and settled the case prior to suit.
$45,000 Settlement for Pedestrian with Nose Broken by City Bus after a Yankee Game
A 50 year-old man had just left Yankee Stadium after a Yankee win and walked to corner of 161st Street in the Bronx. While waiting to cross the street, a passing New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) bus brushed him and knocked him down to ground fracturing his nose. The bus driver claimed that the man walked into the side of the bus while he was driving slowly to avoid all of the pedestrian traffic in the area after the Yankee game. On the eve of trial, the NYCTA settled the case for $45,000.
