Jennifer G. Austin, RN

Jennifer Austin serves as the lead nurse reviewer for the Schlitt Law Firm. She reviews the medical records on all cases, organizing the records, analyzing the medical condition and providing supporting research and analysis to help build the case. Jen has earned her certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant, a designation given to a select group of nurses.

Jen became a registered nurse in 1995 specializing in critical care and emergency nursing. She spent 12 years working in various critical care units in both university and community hospitals. Her experience includes: cardiac critical care; cardiothoracic surgery critical care; neurosurgery, general surgery and medical critical care. Ms. Austin has extensive knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, trauma, death, organ donation, end of life care, strokes and paralysis.

From 2007-2012, Jen worked as an emergency room nurse including 2 ½ years as an emergency room clinical nurse manager. During this time, she gained expert knowledge in orthopedic injuries and trauma, motor vehicle accidents, stabbings, gunshot wounds, assaults and domestic violence, obstetrical emergencies, psychiatric illness and disorders, animal attacks, work related injuries, burns, falls, pediatric emergencies, respiratory emergencies, drug and alcohol abuse and general illness and injuries.

Jen has extensive experience reviewing, analyzing and assessing medical records. She is an expert in documentation, scope of practice and standards of care for nurses, nursing assistants, and EMS personnel. As a nurse manager, she reviewed and audited medical records, physician documentation and performed multiple quality improvement audits. She led a team in implementation of an electronic medical record system. She leads a quality assurance team of nurses around the country with data extraction and submission identifying and reporting adverse events and injuries.

Jen is an active member of the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. She is married and has two children, a son and daughter. When not helping us assess and review cases, Jen enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, knitting, gardening and cooking.
